Engineers Ireland is hosting two seminars by John McGonigle in which he will talk about the engineering of watchmaking, i.e. how watches are made. The first seminar will start at 18:30 of the 23rd of February 2023 and the second a month later on the 23rd of March 2023. Both seminars will be streamed online, but you do have to register.

In the first of his one-hour talks, John will speak about the evolution of watchmaking, from the traditional engineering of early watchmakers to today’s advanced materials and methods, as well as how contemporary watchmakers blend these traditional and modern technologies. The second seminar will focus on how complicated mechanical watches work, explaining the operations of tourbillions, minute-repeaters, and other complications.

John is a co-founder (with his brother Stephen) of the Swiss-based McGonigle Watches and he has now set up his own brand in Ireland called Oileán (Gaelic for island). He has worked on making complicated watches for many high-end Swiss brands, including Audemars Piguet and Christophe Claret, and has done a lot of restoration work.
