Formerly a highly specialized niche within the luxury watch space, independent watchmaking has today become a fully-fledged category of timepieces which collectors find increasingly fascinating. The idea that there is an entire world beyond that of mainstream brands and watches propels us onto a journey of horological discovery, where each watch and its maker share a wonderfully unique relationship. That alone is enough to underscore the emotional appeal of a mechanical watch, far more than any commercially produced marketing message could. Says Revolution editor-at-large Cheryl Chia about independent watchmaking, “This is the only area where you can consistently find good finishing. With social media, finishing suddenly becomes a priority for many collectors.”

While that is a fantastic offering, it also means that the vast majority of independent watches are usually priced out of reach for the average consumer – until now. Meet Determined Geneve, the latest independent watch microbrand bringing the best of collaborative fine watchmaking to a wider audience.

Founded in 2021 and based in Geneva, Switzerland, Determined Geneve started out as an ambitious project among three friends who sought to create timepieces that reflect the spirit of determination and challenge. Why determination? It’s simple.

How many times have we heard stories of watchmakers who produced their best work by overcoming the odds of manufacturing? How many instances have there been of movement creators who never gave up on their dream to design the perfect movement? How well have we remembered the times when innovators and disruptors broke the rules in order to master them? Many of our favorite independents were founded on the backs of such stories of determination and challenge – think MB&F and its insane journey with sapphire crystal, or Ulysse Nardin and its innovative approach with the Freak, Kikuchi Nakagawa and its ridiculously beautiful hands… The examples go on.

So to these stalwarts Determined Geneve tips its hat, but the brand also pursues its own path of passion and watchmaking excellence. Two important things make up the DNA of this company: small-scale production so its timepieces retain their exclusivity always, and a collaborative approach showcasing the work of some of the most talented independent professionals from La Chaux-de-Fonds, known as the cradle of Swiss watchmaking. All its watches are limited edition and sit at the crossroads where quality and authenticity meet innovation and creativity.

What is the Deter-Mind.01

With the launch of the brand in 2021 came its first model, the Deter-Mind.01, a sporty classic timepiece designed to evoke an urban aesthetic and constructed to withstand the rigors of everyday wear. Yet, looking at the bold font selection for its numerals – the 12 and 6 hour markers as well as those double-digit minute markers on the bezel – this proudly Swiss made timepiece embodies the style of high octane motorsports. Its hefty, robust case is made of marine-grade 316L stainless steel and given an elegant circular brushed finish over the lugs and crown protectors, as well as the bi-directional bezel, which juxtaposes steel and black-coated surfaces for maximum legibility. Being mounted on ceramic ball bearings for smooth and precise rotation makes the bezel extra satisfying to manipulate whether you’re setting a countdown timer or just manipulating it out of sheer enjoyment.

Further aesthetic details set the Deter-Mind.01 apart from other watches in its category, and help define the visual codes of Determined Geneve. There is the D-shaped profile of the crown guards, meticulously polished to bring a beautiful contrast to the rest of the case, which is brushed. The hour indexes are also capped with a subtle semi-circular D motif. The OCD ones among us will be pleased with how harmoniously the date window has been integrated into the dial, blending in perfectly with the hour indexes while remaining clearly legible – as all date indicators should. These elements, plus the hour and minute hands, are filled with vibrant green SuperLuminova allowing the timepiece to perform flawlessly even in the dark.

Consistent with all high-performance modern timepieces, the crystal and case back are made of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Observe how the glass has slightly curved edges which add to the sophistication of the Deter-Mind.01’s overall design. That right there is a tacit reminder of the eternal appeal of Swiss watchmaking: craftsmanship in all the right places.

Dressed predominantly in black with light touches of bright red, the Deter-Mind.01 is not a timepiece for the wallflowers among us. Its 41mm case with a thickness of 11.45mm means business and is purpose-built for a fast-paced, action-packed lifestyle. That said, its well-balanced proportions ensure it sits nicely on the wrist, never getting in the way and always a trusty companion for busy urban lifestyles.
